Can You Run Auctions on Shopify or Wix? What the Apps Can and Can’t Do

Yes, you can run auctions on Shopify and on Wix. Neither does it natively, but both app stores have auction apps that add timed bidding to a product page, some for a few dollars a month. Whether that’s good enough depends on one question: are auctions an occasional extra for your store, or the business itself?

Here’s what the apps can do, where they stop, and when it’s time for a dedicated auction platform.

TL;DR: auctions on Shopify and Wix

Ready for a proper auction site? Ours includes all of it on a one-time license from $899.

Auctions on Shopify

Shopify doesn’t support bidding out of the box. The Shopify App Store has several auction apps that add a bidding widget to product pages. Current listings describe features like timed auctions on products or whole collections, countdown and current-bid widgets, reserve prices, anti-snipe extensions, Buy It Now options, and automatic draft orders for the winner. Pricing ranges from free plans to a few dollars a month, with higher tiers around $30 to $80 a month.

Many of these apps are recent, some with few or no reviews yet. Before committing, check the update history, how the app handles two bids in the last second, and how the winner pays: an automatic charge, a draft order, or an emailed checkout link.

Auctions on Wix

Wix is similar. The Wix App Market lists several auction apps for Wix Stores, mostly from third-party developers. Typical features include starting price, reserve and increment settings, bidding on product and gallery pages, anti-sniping, outbid and win emails, and checkout through the normal store cart. Free plans tend to limit you to one active auction, and paid plans start at a few dollars a month.

Wix apps share the same limits as Shopify ones, and some add their own. One app’s guide notes that bidders must accept cookies before bidding, which matters if your site uses a consent banner.

When an app is enough

A boutique auctioning one signed print a month. A charity shop running a holiday auction on ten items. A sneaker store testing whether its customers like bidding. For these, an app on your existing store is the right call: cheap, quick, and your customers already have accounts.

Where the apps stop working

Store apps are built on top of a shopping cart, and auctions behave differently from carts. Several things tend to go wrong as you grow.

The closing minutes come first. When dozens of bids arrive at the end, an app running through the store’s normal systems can lag or mis-order bids, and your bidders notice. Then the money: auction businesses usually need a buyer’s premium added to the hammer price, plus tax on the total, which store checkouts don’t handle naturally. Third, trust: bidder approval, deposits and bidding limits for valuable lots are basic in auction software and mostly missing from store apps.

Last, scale. A sale with 400 lots closing in sequence, a consignor statement for each seller, or a live auctioneer calling lots online is outside what a store app is built for.

Moving to a dedicated auction platform

When auctions become the main business, move them to software built for them, and keep Shopify or Wix for fixed-price sales if you like. Our auction software gives you a real-time bidding engine with proxy bidding, soft close, reserve prices and forced increments, plus Buy It Now, bidder deposits and whitelisting, CSV bulk upload, auto-invoicing with your own buyer’s premium, and Stripe and PayPal checkout. It’s white-label on your own domain.

Pricing is a one-time license ($899, $1,999 or $2,999) with no commission. If you’re weighing other builders too, see the best auction website builders and WooCommerce auction plugin alternatives.

Frequently asked questions

Can you build an auction site on Shopify?

You can add auctions to a Shopify store with a third-party app. It works for occasional auctions. For a business built around auctions, a dedicated platform handles bidding, premiums and bidder approval better.

Can you do auctions on Wix?

Yes, through apps in the Wix App Market that add timed bidding to Wix Stores products. Free plans usually limit you to one active auction.

Does Shopify have a built-in auction feature?

No. Auctions need a third-party app.

What is the best auction app for Shopify?

It depends on your needs and changes as apps are released. Compare current listings for anti-sniping, how winners are charged, review count and update history.

Is a Shopify auction app good for high-value items?

Usually not on its own. High-value auctions need bidder verification, deposits and reliable last-minute bidding, which dedicated auction software provides.

Can I keep Shopify and run auctions elsewhere?

Yes. Many sellers keep their store for fixed-price products and run auctions on a separate auction site under the same brand. Ask us how that would work for you.
