Auction vs. Buy It Now: Which Sells for More, and When

List a rare item at a fixed price and you might leave hundreds of dollars on the table. Auction an ordinary one and it might sell for half its value at 3 a.m. on a Tuesday. Choosing between an auction and Buy It Now comes down to one thing: how sure you are what the item is worth.

Here’s when each format earns more, how the hybrid options work, and how to decide for each listing.

TL;DR: auction vs. Buy It Now

  • Auction when the item is rare, in demand, or hard to price. Competition finds the real value.
  • Buy It Now when the item is common, the price is well known, or you need steady, predictable sales.
  • Hybrids often work best: an auction with a Buy It Now price, a reserve, or “make an offer”.
  • Timing and audience matter as much as format. An auction only works if enough bidders see it.

When an auction earns more

Auctions work when demand is uncertain and buyers care a lot. A first-edition book, a well-documented classic car, a vintage watch, a lot of rare cards: you don’t know whether it’s worth $800 or $2,000, and neither do the buyers until they compete. Two determined bidders can push the price well past any fixed figure you’d have dared to set. That’s exactly what happens on Bring a Trailer every week.

Auctions also suit sellers who need a sale by a certain date: estates, liquidations, business closures, a dealer clearing aged stock. The format guarantees an outcome, even if it isn’t the hoped-for price. Add a reserve if you can’t accept a sale below a certain number (see absolute vs. reserve auctions).

The catch is audience. An auction with three watchers is a discount sale. Promote it, end it at a time when your bidders are awake, and use soft close so last-minute bids extend the clock rather than ending it.

When Buy It Now earns more

For common items with a well-known price (a current iPhone, a popular power tool, new stock you can restock), there’s little hidden value for an auction to uncover. Buyers check the going rate, and an auction often just finds a lower price. A fixed price at or near market sells steadily, with no timing risk.

Buy It Now also suits buyers who don’t want to wait seven days or risk losing. For a lot of everyday shopping, convenience wins over the chance of a bargain.

The hybrid options

Auction with a Buy It Now price: the item runs as an auction, but a buyer can end it instantly by paying a set price, usually only until the first bid. It catches the impatient buyer without giving up the auction’s upside. Set the Buy It Now price high enough that taking it is a clear win for you.

Reserve auctions protect you from a low result while still letting bidding find the price. “Make an offer” on a fixed-price listing lets you negotiate with motivated buyers. And many businesses simply run both formats side by side: auctions for unusual stock, fixed prices for the rest.

How to decide, listing by listing

Ask four questions. Is it rare or unusual? Could two buyers really want it? Do you have enough bidders seeing your listings? Do you need it sold by a date? Three yeses point to an auction. Mostly noes point to Buy It Now. Mixed answers suggest a hybrid.

Then test. Run the same type of item both ways for a month and compare the net price after fees, not the headline price.

Running both on your own site

Marketplaces decide which formats you can use and take a cut of both. On your own site, you choose per listing. Our auction software supports English auctions with or without reserve, Buy It Now on auction lots, and sealed-bid and Dutch formats, with proxy bidding, soft close, forced increments and auto-invoicing (full list on the features page). For multi-seller sites, the multi-vendor marketplace lets each seller pick their own format.

It’s a one-time license ($899 to $2,999) with no fees on sales. For how auction sites set their fees, see how online auction sites make money.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to auction or use Buy It Now?

Auction rare, in-demand or hard-to-price items, and use Buy It Now for common items with a known market price. If unsure, run an auction with a reserve or a Buy It Now option.

Do auctions sell for more than Buy It Now?

For rare and collectible items with several interested buyers, often yes. For common items, fixed prices usually do better because there’s no hidden value for bidding to reveal.

What is an auction with Buy It Now?

An auction where a buyer can end the listing immediately by paying a set price, usually only before the first bid is placed.

How should I set a Buy It Now price on an auction?

High enough that you’d be happy if someone took it, typically above your realistic auction estimate. Too low, and you cap your upside.

Should I use a reserve price?

Use one if you can’t accept a sale below a certain amount. Be aware that reserve auctions can attract fewer bidders than no-reserve ones.

Can I offer both auctions and fixed prices on my own website?

Yes. Our software supports both, per listing. Talk to our team about setting it up.
